What can your retail outlet do?

Here are some easy ideas for helping you to reduce the use of plastic bags in your store.

  • If customers only have one or two items, train your staff to ask customers "Are you alright without a bag?"
  • Put plastic bag reduction posters and reusable bags near your tills. If your customers are aware of the problems caused by plastic bags, they are more likely to buy the reusable options.
  • Offer reusable bag options such as calico, 'Go Green' bags, paper or string bags, and baskets for sale to your customers or giveaway boxes.
  • Educate staff to promote your reusable bag options to all customers by saying "Would you like to buy a reusable bag?"
  • Create great local PR. Don’t give away free plastic bags – charge 10 cents per bag and give the proceeds to local charities.
  • Ban plastic check-out bags altogether. You stand to save on the cost of giving them away for free!
