Reuters Bonneville to double wind-powered electricity

Date: 17-Dec-01
Country: USA

BPA, which supplies about half the power consumed in the Pacific Northwest from the region's plentiful hydro supplies, bought 90 megawatts of power from the Statewide Wind Project on the Oregon-Washington border near Walla Walla, Washington.

PacifiCorp Power Marketing Inc., which markets power from the plant owned by FPL Group Inc , will deliver power to BPA beginning Dec. 29.

FPL is installing 399 wind turbines on hilltops around Walla Walla, which will have a total output of 265 megawatts. One megawatt is enough to power roughly 1,000 homes.

"BPA's latest commitment to purchase wind power helps ensure that we are diversifying our energy portfolio," Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham said in a statement.
