Reuters HK to toughen litter squad with martial arts classes

Date: 17-Jul-02
Country: CHINA

The government decided to offer a voluntary, three-day course in Japanese aikido after one enforcement officer was attacked in June when he tried to fine a man for spitting.

"We will be providing coaches and we hope all our enforcement officers will join the classes," the spokesman said.

Six other officers were slightly injured yesterday in two separate cases when they tried to fine two men for littering.

One of the men has been arrested for assaulting and obstructing a public officer, said a police spokeswoman.

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department has some 5,000 officers.

Hong Kong raised the fine for littering to HK$600 (US$77) from around HK$500 in June to help clean up the streets in the tiny territory of nearly seven million people.
