Romanian troops hurt by landmine in Afghanistan
Date: 08-Oct-02
Country: AFGHANISTAN
One soldier sustained a minor head wound that required stitches, the other suffered minor burns to a leg, U.S. spokesman Colonel Roger King told reporters at Bagram air base, the main staging post for coalition operations in Afghanistan.
The blast happened southeast of the southern city of Kandahar, former bastion of the ousted Taliban regime.
Romania has contributed troops both to an international peacekeeping force in the capital Kabul as well as to the U.S.-led coalition hunting for remnants of the Taliban and Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network.
U.S.-led forces launched an offensive to flush out bin Laden, blamed for the September 11 attacks in the United States, and punish his Taliban protectors this time last year.
