"The environmental approval comes with 18 detailed conditions that require additional project work in the areas of air quality, marine impacts, spill prevention and response and fuel delivery," said Jim Brogan, NB Power's Vice President Generation, in a statement.

NB Power's continued operation of Coleson Cove beyond 2005 requires upgrades to meet the new environmental standards for sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions.

Coleson Cove is a 1,050 megawatt facility constructed in the 1970s capable of providing electricity for about a million homes or for export to the U.S. Northeast.

As part of the C$750 million refurbishment, NB Power said it will install advanced environmental control equipment that will significantly reduce emission rates.

NB Power said converting the station's fuel supply from oil to Orimulsion will significantly lower fuel costs and fund the new environmental equipment.

Orimulsion is a mixture of natural occurring hydrocarbons and water that can be used in place of oil, natural gas or coal.

NB Power, which is owned by the province, supplies power produced at 15 hydro, coal, oil, nuclear and Orimulsion-powered facilities to some 340,000 customers in New Brunswick.
