Reuters Mexico closes firms sending sand to US beaches

Date: 16-Oct-02
Country: MEXICO

The Baja California companies have shipped some 450,000 tonnes of sand so far this year to help restore weather-beaten beaches in California and Hawaii, according to the federal environmental protection agency, known as Profepa.

But the companies had caused erosion problems of their own, mainly by stripping sand from stream and river beds, which has lead to flooding in some Baja California vineyards, Profepa said.

"There's an important market in the United States that is demanding large quantities of Mexican sand," Alejandro Alvarez, Profepa delegate in Baja California told Reuters.
