Planet Ark World Environment News - in partnership with Colonial First State Genzyme Chooses UK for Research Site

Date: 15-Jan-04
Country: UK

Genzyme said it chose Cambridge over other locations in Europe given the pool of world-class scientific talent in the area. Some 200 biotech companies are based in and around Cambridge.

Financial details were not disclosed, though Carlo Incerti, the company's head of research and development for Europe, told Reuters the initial investment in 2004 would involve only "a few million dollars."

Genzyme already has manufacturing and clinical development operations in France, Belgium and the Netherlands, as well as drug collaborations with European companies including Cambridge Antibody Technology Plc. But the new site will be its first dedicated research operation in Europe.

In total, the group employs more than 1,500 staff in research and development, mostly in the Boston region.
