USA: March 22, 2004

HOUSTON - A collision between two ships has closed the Houston Ship Channel, the U.S. Coast Guard Houston Vessel Traffic Center said.

The ship channel was closed at 2:10 p.m. CST (2010 GMT) by the collision, a Coast Guard spokeswoman said. She had no further details about the ships involved, crew injuries or potential environmental damage from the accident.

A Houston television station reported the collision was between a tug boat pushing a barge and a tanker. KPRC-TV said on its Web Site that fuel was leaking from the barge after the collision.

Weather conditions were clear last week in the ship channel
