Date: 10-Jun-04
Country: RUSSIA
"I think this has to be a record, 24 surviving babies is a lot for anyone," said a spokesman for the zoo in Kaliningrad, a western outpost of Russia on the Baltic Sea, on Tuesdy.
Hippos give birth to a single baby on average every two years after becoming sexually active around the age of five. Mary was born in 1957. The oldest recorded hippo died in a Munich zoo aged 61.
