EU faults Britain on environment

The Commission is to refer Italy to the European Court of Justice after accusing it of 28 breaches of EU environment laws, including waste water pollution. It said yesterday Italy denied its citizens the same quality of life enjoyed by other EU nationals.
In Portugal's case, the Commission is taking legal action for seven separate breaches, some of which concern its failure to comply with EU law on nature protection.
Other Portuguese cases involve breaches of air and water quality, protection of the ozone layer, and climate change.
Britain is accused of failing to prohibit trade in all endangered animals and plants under EU protection, and for excluding Crown Land developments from environmental impact assessments and public consultations.
