Reuters Tropical Storm Bonnie Turns North in US Gulf

At 4 p.m. CDT, the storm was located about 315 miles south-southwest of the mouth of the Mississippi River.

The storm was moving at near 6 miles per hour and this forward speed was expected to continue Tuesday night as it gradually turns to the northeast by Wednesday.

Maximum sustained winds were almost 50 miles per hour with higher gusts. The Hurricane Center forecast some strengthening during the next 24 hours.

Bonnie was still expected to hit land on the Florida Panhandle Thursday morning.

Bonnie is a "very small" storm with tropical storm force winds extending out only about 45 miles from the center, the NHC noted.
