Air Liquide to invest 190 mln euros in Dutch plant

FRANCE: September 22, 2004

PARIS - Air Liquide (AIRP.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) will invest 190 million euros ($231.4 million) in a cogeneration plant to supply steam and power to a Shell (RD.AS: Quote, Profile, Research) (SHEL.L: Quote, Profile, Research) refinery and another company in the Netherlands, the French industrial gas maker said.

Air Liquide agreed to supply the steam and power to Shell Nederland Raffinaderij and Dutch utility ENECO Energie BV at Pernis, near Rotterdam, for 15 years. This project would require investment of 190 million euros and would come on stream in 2007, the company said in a statement.

Through cogeneration, steam and electricity are produced at the same time and the method is particularly adapted for industrial sites or basins with large steam requirements.

The new natural gas-fuelled plant will replace the boilers that burn the refinery's heavy residues, Air Liquide said, cutting emissions.

Air Liquide shares eased 0.3 percent to 129 euros at 0738 GMT.
