The national pump price for regular unleaded gasoline dropped 3.3 cents over the last week to $2.001 a gallon, but still was up 50 cents from a year ago, according to a survey of service stations by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

The EIA, the Energy Department's analytical arm, also said the average price truckers pay for diesel fuel fell 4.3 cents to $2.163 a gallon, up 69 cents from a year ago.

More savings at the pump could be on the way. The price for crude oil accounts for about half the cost of making gasoline and diesel fuel, and the price for crude has fallen from its record high of almost $56 a barrel two weeks ago to $49.

The EIA's weekly survey showed the retail price for cleaner-burning reformulated gasoline, sold in polluted metropolitan areas, declined 2.67 cents to $2.107 a gallon.

The West Coast had the most expensive regular unleaded gasoline, with the price down 2.4 cents to $2.249 a gallon. San Francisco topped the agency's city survey of gasoline costs, with the price falling 1.5 cents to $2.385 a gallon.

The U.S. Gulf Coast had the cheapest fuel, with the price down 1.9 cents to $1.899 per gallon. Houston had the best deal at the pump at $1.876 a gallon, down 1.5 cents.

The weekly report also showed gasoline prices were unchanged at $2.083 in Miami, down 0.8 cent to $2.056 in Seattle, down 1.6 cents to $2.041 in New York City, down 5.1 cents to $2.04 in Chicago, and down 9 cents to $1.882 in Cleveland.

Separately, truckers on the West Coast paid the most for diesel fuel at $2.324 a gallon, down 4.6 cents from the prior week. The Gulf Coast states had the cheapest diesel at $2.096 a gallon, down 5.1 cents.
