Spain Seeks Three Planes For Oil Spills

SPAIN: November 15, 2004

MADRID - Spain will seek to acquire three aircraft specially equipped to fight oil spills like the Prestige disaster that soiled the northwest Spanish coastline in 2002, the Development Ministry said on Friday.

The three planes -- budgeted at 28 million euros ($36.01 million) each -- would be similar to the CN-235 made by European aerospace firm EADS, the ministry said.

Spain will also seek to acquire three helicopters to be used to combat maritime pollution at a cost of 11 million euros each but has not yet chosen a supplier.

Spain will select from among the Eurocopter AS-365 N3, United Technologies Corp.'s Sikorsky S76C and the Agusta Bell AB139 models, the ministry said in statement.

The Prestige oil tanker split in two and sank off the coast of Galicia in November 2002, creating Spain's worst-ever environmental disaster.

Spain also plans to buy up to six ships in coming years for use in sea rescue and combating pollution, the ministry said. ($1=.7776 Euro)
