Starbucks to Use Cups Made with Recycled Material
Date: 19-Nov-04
Country: USA
The move comes as Seattle-based Starbucks is in the midst of an aggressive plan to ensure coffee sold in its stores comes from environmentally friendly farms that pay workers a fair wage.
Starbucks supplier Mississippi River Corp. in September received the US Food and Drug Administration's unprecedented approval for the new cups, which will be 10-percent made from recycled material.
The cups are expected to be in US company-owned stores by the end of 2005, Starbucks said in a statement.
Jim Donald, who will become Starbucks' chief executive next year, said the move is "an important milestone for Starbucks in addressing the environmental impact associated with our paper-buying practices."
Starbucks shares were up 59 cents, or 1.1 percent, at $55.23 Wednesday on Nasdaq.
