Four people were also reported missing in the floods, which have spread across the states of Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu.
Thousands of people in the three states were left without electricity after national utility Tenaga Nasional was forced to shut 292 sub-stations due to the floods.
Floods are common along Malaysia's east coast towards year-end when heavy monsoon rains leave homes and cars submerged.
The death toll has risen from five at the weekend. The most recent deaths occurred in Kelantan where two youths were swept away by swift currents in separate villages.
The government plans to open more relief centres in the region as the floodwaters spread. Thousands have been evacuated to makeshift camps set up on higher ground in schools and other public buildings.
