SPAIN: January 18, 2005
MADRID - Spanish wind turbine maker Gamesa said on Monday it would build new capacity in the US state of Pennsylvania over the next five years that will generate 1,000 megawatts (MW) of power.
Gamesa said it had already signed sales contracts for 600 MW of wind power with electricity companies there. The project, set in the South Park industrial complex at Ebensburg near Johnstown, will create up to 500 jobs including 236 permanent positions. It will be Gamesa's first productive plant outside Spain. The plant is the final stage in Gamesa's development plans in Pennsylvania that in total represent an investment of $40 million, the Spanish firm said. It said the United States would see the strongest growth in wind power over the next few years. Gamesa is also active in several other US states, mainly in the Midwest. Gamesa shares rose 1.7 percent to 10.79 euros ($14.14) after its statement, making it the biggest gainer in the Ibex-35 index of leading Spanish shares.
