Cambodia Bans Imports of Poultry From Neighbours

CAMBODIA: February 11, 2005

PHNOM PENH - Cambodia banned imports of poultry and eggs from Vietnam and Thailand on Thursday following confirmation the country had another outbreak of the deadly bird flu virus that has killed 45 people in little more than a year.

"The import of cheap poultry products from our neighbours not only hurts domestic production in our country, but also causes the spreading of the deadly bird flu," Prime Minister Hun Sen said in a statement.

Following the spread of the H5N1 virus to about half of Vietnam this year and the death of a Cambodian woman in a Vietnamese hospital, it reappeared last week in the province of Kandal, just south of the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh.

However, there had been no further reports of suspected cases either in poultry or humans in Cambodia, officials said.

Bird flu first hit Cambodia in September last year. The virus has killed 32 Vietnamese, 12 Thais and the Cambodian woman.
