BRUSSELS - The European Union's executive Commission criticised Greece and Spain on Tuesday for breaches of EU environmental law ranging from poor waste disposal to insufficient planning for a construction site.
|
The Commission called on Spain to comply with a ruling by the EU's highest court regarding uncontrolled waste disposal sites. It also said it would refer Spain to the European Court of Justice for not carrying out an appropriate environmental impact assessment for an airport that was to be built near an area with endangered birds.
Separately, the Commission said it was taking legal action against Greece in the form of a warning letter for not cleaning up an illegal waste dump and a temporary waste storage site. "These violations are endangering human health and may be harming the environment," it said in a statement.
