STRASBOURG, France - The European Parliament gave its approval to a set of environmental rules limiting ships from releasing sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particle emissions on Wednesday.
|
According to the European Commission, which authored the bill, S02 harms lake and forest ecosystems while particles cause breathing problems in humans and can lead to premature death. The rules agreed on Wednesday, which regulate the amount of S02 permitted in ship fuel, will reduce SO2 from ships in the European Union by more than 500,000 tonnes a year from 2006, the Commission said.
