Planet Ark World Environment News - in partnership with Colonial First State Floods Threaten Villages in East Serbia

Date: 22-Apr-05
Country: SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO

The flooding, which is threatening to spread to many other villages, was thought to be the worst in the area in 40 years.

Most of the 3,000 residents of Jasa Tomic fled to nearby towns, but some stayed behind to help the army dig a ditch to channel the water back into the river.

The flooding was caused by the river overflowing in neighbouring Romania which is 9 km (5.5 miles) away.

Three dozen houses in the village had completely disappeared under the water. Basketball nets in the sports ground barely protruded above some two metres of water.
