Planet Ark World Environment News - in partnership with Colonial First State Japanese Tie Makers Fume over 'Cool Biz' Drive

Date: 14-Jun-05
Country: JAPAN

They have asked the government to stop giving their wares a bad image just as shoppers are thinking of what to buy dad for Father's Day on June 19.

Male government workers and politicians who stoically cling to their dark suits and ties as summer temperatures climb are being encouraged to leave off their jackets and ties between June 1 and Sept. 30 so air conditioner thermostats can be set higher, helping to save energy and fight global warming.

"Father's Day is close and they seem worried, but neckties are not going to disappear," Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda -- dressed in an open-necked blue shirt -- told a regular news conference when asked about the complaint.

He also urged necktie makers to develop special summer wear.

Trade Minister Shoichi Nakagawa seemed more sympathetic.

"It is unfair if the campaign singles out neckties as the villains. We'd like to conduct a hearing about possible repercussions on the industry," Kyodo news agency quoted him as telling a separate news conference.
