GERMANY: November 14, 2005

BERLIN - Authorities in southern Germany have recovered two canisters of herbicide, apparently deliberately planted to contaminate water supplies, a newspaper said on Sunday.

The Suedwest Presse, quoting unnamed sources in the Baden-Wuerttemberg state government, said the two opened canisters had been recovered in Lake Constance, which supplies drinking water in the region near the border with Switzerland.

Tests suggested that the canisters, recovered near the town of Sipplingen around 300 metres (yards) from the shore at a depth of 70 metres, contained Atrazine, a widely used herbicide.

An anonymous letter had threatened that further canisters may be released, the paper said.

Police declined immediate comment on the report.
