J. Crew Group Inc., Target of Protest, Says Stops Selling Fur

J. Crew made the decision about a month ago for business reasons, according to spokesman Owen Blicksilver, who added that the move was not related to the campaign by animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA.
PETA Wednesday said it launched its J. Crew campaign, which included protests, petitions, and letters to the company, on Sept. 12. The group is planning a celebration outside a J. Crew store in Santa Monica, California, on Thursday.
J. Crew, which is controlled by private equity firm Texas Pacific Group, earlier this month delayed a planned initial public offering of its shares until early 2006.
PETA is best known for its campaigns against fast-food companies and has had an impact on businesses despite heavy-handed tactics like throwing fake blood at fur-clad celebrities.
Last year, poultry producer Pilgrim's Pride Corp. vowed to crack down on chicken abuse after a video released by PETA showed workers stomping and kicking live chickens at a plant that supplies chicken to KFC.
