UNITED NATIONS - More than 30,000 people in Honduras have been left homeless by Tropical Storm Gamma, which killed 34 people there earlier this month and flooded low-lying areas, the United Nations said on Thursday.
|
Some 90,000 people were affected by the Nov. 18-20 storm, which also damaged banana farms supplying firms like Chiquita Brands International Inc., said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. The world body has deployed five teams to Honduras to conduct damage assessments in collaboration with local officials, the UN office said. The World Food Program has distributed nearly 200,000 family rations there and is planning to provide 1,750 tonnes of food for the next three months, it said.
