Planet Ark World Environment News - in partnership with Colonial First State WTO Found EU GMO Moratorium Violated Trade Rule - US

Date: 08-Feb-06
Country: USA

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, also confirmed that the WTO had found six individual states - France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Luxembourg and Greece - broke the rules by applying their own bans on marketing and importing GMO’s.

The United States, Canada and Argentina brought the WTO complaint against the EU, arguing that its moratorium on GMO approvals hurt their exports and was not based on science.

Corn, cotton and soybean products all suffered delays because of the moratorium, the official said.

He added that the final report would be issued in a few months and that a further 90 days would be allowed for appeals.

"We're not at the end of this road yet but the report is a significant milestone," the official said.
