Reuters Anti-Fur Protesters Strike at London Fashion Week

Date: 16-Feb-06
Country: UK

Macdonald was targeted as he arrived for a party with actress and hotel heiress Paris Hilton after showing his autumn and winter collections at London's Natural History Museum.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said the flour attack had been part of its campaign against the use of fur in fashion.

Next in its sights, activists said, was American Vogue Editor Anna Wintour, who has frequently drawn protests for wearing fur coats.

"There is nothing remotely fashionable about the torture and death of animals killed for fur," said PETA spokeswoman Yvonne Taylor.

"Julien Macdonald may have been able to ignore images of bloody skinned animals gasping for breath in the past, but hopefully a dash of flour will help him rise to the occasion and forsake fur once and for all."

Hilton, who dodged the flour attack, had earlier taken to the catwalk in a surprise appearance to model dresses from Macdonald's collection.

She showed off a silver-grey prom dress and a "barely there" mini-dress, but did not appear in any fur, unlike other models at the show who strode out in a selection of lavish pelts.

But when the pair arrived for an aftershow party they were attacked by the campaigners who had been waiting outside.

Police said no arrests had been made.

A spokesman for Macdonald declined to comment.

PETA protesters also stormed the catwalk during Macdonald's previous London Fashion Week show last year.

They are planning further anti-fur protests around this year's event, which ends on Saturday.

Activists said they planned to picket a glitzy party to be co-hosted by American Vogue's Wintour.

Wintour, whose attendance at London Fashion Week has been hailed by commentators as a major boost to the event, has had cream pies stuffed in her face, been covered in paint and has also had a dead raccoon thrown at her at a restaurant table.
