The tremor occurred at 5:24 a.m. PDT (8:24 EDT/1224 GMT) and was magnitude 4.7, rated as "light," the agency said on its Web site.
The epicenter was 28 miles (44 km) southeast of San Jose. There were no immediate reports of damage or injury.
