Major Earthquakes to Hit Southern, Central Asia

The earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck 260 km (160 miles) northeast of Kabul, the United States Geological Survey and officials at Pakistan's meteorological department said.
Here is a list of the major earthquakes to have hit the southern and central Asia since 2001:
Jan 26, 2001 - INDIA - An earthquake of magnitude 7.7 strikes the western state of Gujarat killing at least 19,700 people and causing damage in neighbouring Pakistan. The quake affected 15.9 million people in 7,904 villages.
March 3, 2002 - AFGHANISTAN - More than 100 people killed when a mountain village in the northern Samangan province is buried in a landslide triggered by 7.2 magnitude earthquake.
March 25, 2002 - AFGHANISTAN - At least 1,500 people are killed when a series of quakes of between magnitude 5 and 6 strike northern Afghanistan, destroying the district capital of Nahrin in the Hindu Kush mountains.
June 22, 2002 - IRAN - An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale razes dozens of villages in the northern Qazvin province, killing 229.
Nov. 21, 2002 - PAKISTAN - A 5.5 magnitude earthquake in the Kashmir region kills 23.
Dec. 26, 2003 - IRAN - An earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale devastates the city of Bam, 1,000 km (600 miles) southeast of Tehran, killing about 31,000 people.
Dec. 26, 2004 - ASIA - At least 230,000 are dead and missing in the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. Giant waves crash into Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India, drowning thousands and swamping tourist isles in Thailand and the Maldives. Some 35,000 are dead or missing in Sri Lanka and 18,000 in India.
Feb. 21, 2005 - IRAN - An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale strikes the town of Zarand about 700 km (440 miles) southeast of Tehran, killing 612 people.
May 28, 2005 - IRAN - A 6.2 magnitude earthquake in the northern Mazandaran province kills 35.
Oct. 8, 2005 - PAKISTAN - Some 73,000 people are killed by a 7.6 magnitude quake that strikes about 95 km (60 miles) northeast of Islamabad. The quake also rocks Indian Kashmir, killing 1,244 there.
Nov. 27, 2005 - IRAN - A 5.9 magnitude earthquake razes villages on the Gulf island of Qeshm, killing 10.
March 31, 2006 - IRAN - An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale hits the area of Doroud and Boroujerd in the western Lorestan province, killing at least 70 people.
