Three Moderate Quakes Hit Indonesia
Date: 30-Apr-07
Country: INDONESIA
"The quakes do not have the potential to generate a tsunami," Suharjono, head of the Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics agency, told Reuters.
A 5.1 magnitude undersea quake first struck the northern part of Sumatra island at a depth of 33 km. Two further quakes measuring 4.3 and 4.7 later hit near Padang in western Sumatra and Kupang on Timor island.
Indonesia lies in the so called "Pacific Ring of Fire" where seismic activity is frequent because of the shifting of tectonic plates.
