EU Targets Empty Trucks to Cut Road Emissions

BELGIUM: May 24, 2007

BRUSSELS - The European Union should adopt uniform rules allowing road hauliers to drop off goods in EU states where they are not registered to cut emissions from empty lorries, its executive Commission said on Wednesday.

The Commission has recommended trucks making international trips should be allowed to make three national stops within seven days while on the way back to their point of departure.

That means a truck starting in Germany with a delivery bound for Italy could pick up goods there when it arrived, and drop them off at destinations within France on its way back home.

The measures would reduce the number of trucks that drive back empty to their points of origin because they are not allowed to make other deliveries, the Commission said.

Current rules vary across the 27-nation bloc.

The Commission also proposed measures to increase competition and safety in the sector.
