Tropical Storm Dalila Forms Off Mexican Pacific

MEXICO: July 24, 2007

MEXICO CITY - Tropical storm Dalila formed in the Pacific Ocean near Mexico on Monday and was expected to head up the coast over the next few days but not make landfall.

The US National Hurricane Center in Miami said Dalila, with gusts up to 52 mph (83 kph), was moving northwest at 10 mph (17 kph) parallel to the Baja California peninsula.

"It cannot be ruled out that Dalila could become a hurricane," the hurricane center said on its Web site. "However ... the storm has work to do to overcome its internal disorganization."

A tropical storm becomes a hurricane when maximum sustained winds reach 74 mph (119 kph).

Mexico's Pacific coast was blitzed with hurricanes and storms last year but has not been hit so far in 2007.

Last October, Hurricane Paul killed at least four people in northwestern Mexico. In September, Hurricane Lane took three lives along the Pacific coast and Hurricane John killed at least three people in Baja California.
