Finnish Valio Withdraws Dioxin-Contaminated Cream

FINLAND: August 22, 2007

HELSINKI - Finland's largest dairy group Valio said on Tuesday it is withdrawing cream from stores because of higher-than-permitted levels of dioxin.

European Union food safety experts issued an alert on guar gum earlier this month after high levels of dioxin had been found in the ingredient imported from an Indian supplier.

"We use guar gum as a thickener in cream and one of the shipments we had bought had high levels of dioxin," Valio's marketing director Annikka Hurme told Reuters.

She said Valio had used contaminated guar gum to make hundreds of thousands of litres of cream in early July.

Valio estimates that most of the cream containing high levels of dioxin has already been consumed, but Hurme said that based on analysis it would not cause any danger to consumers.
