POLAND: August 22, 2007

WARSAW - Five people died and a number of others were missing after storms ravaged Poland's lake region on Tuesday, with strong winds causing havoc for boats and kayaks.

Dozens of people were caught in the storms in northeastern Poland and struggled to reach the shore as rescue workers and special dogs tried to help them.

Media reports said capsized yachts were still bobbing in the lake waters after the storms subsided in the evening.

Anna Szyszka, head of the Warminsko-Mazurskie region's government, told public television five people were killed and eight were still missing.
