Date: 09-Jul-07
Country: US

The world's largest package delivery company said it had placed an order for 167 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) delivery trucks and 139 new propane-powered delivery trucks in North America.

The chassis for the CNG trucks will be made by Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp, a unit of Daimler AG's Freightliner LLC. The engines will be made by Cummins Westport, a joint venture of Cummins Inc and Westport Innovations Inc.

Those trucks are expected to yield a 20 percent emissions reduction and a 10 percent improvement in fuel economy.

The chassis of the propane-powered vehicles will be made made by Navistar International Corp unit Workhorse Custom Chassis and the engines by privately-owned Baytech Corp.

These delivery vehicles will emit about 20 percent less nitrogen oxide and 60 percent less carbon monoxide than conventional vehicles, UPS said in a statement.

The Atlanta-based company said the new vehicles would add to 800 CNG package cars it has in the United States and the 600 propane-powered vehicles it operates in Canada and Mexico.

The UPS fleet includes 94,500 delivery trucks worldwide, with just over 70,000 in the United States.
