Reuters Small Quake Hits Chile Mining Region, No Damages

Date: 28-Dec-07
Country: CHILE

The quake struck at 8:40 p.m. (2340 GMT) and was centered 41 miles (65 km) east-northeast of the mining town of Calama, according to the US Geological Survey, near one of Chile's largest copper mines, Codelco Norte.

A spokesman at the mine, owned by state-owned company Codelco, said the quake had had no impact.

"Everything is normal," he told Reuters by telephone.

On Nov. 14, a 7.7 magnitude quake in the same region collapsed homes and buildings, killing two people and injuring 115, and there have been a number of aftershocks since then.
