The quake occurred at 4:52 p.m. local time (1952 GMT) and struck at a depth of about 22 miles (35 km), according to the US Geological Survey.

"No injuries were reported. In the southern district of Iquique, power was partially cut," Chile's National Emergency Office said on its Web site.

In November, a 7.7-magnitude quake hit Chile's northern region, killing two people and injuring more than 100.
