MEXICO: July 18, 2008

MEXICO CITY - Tropical Storm Fausto formed on Wednesday off Mexico's Pacific coast and was expected to strengthen as it moves parallel to the shore but far out at sea, the US National Hurricane Center said.

With maximum sustained winds near 40 mph (65 kph) and stronger gusts, Fausto was 385 miles (620 km) south of the resort area of Acapulco and moving towards the west at about 16 mph (26 kph), the NHC said.

"Some strengthening is forecast during the next 24 hours," the Miami-based center said.

The NHC's five-day forecast did not see Fausto heading toward land but said the storm could affect Mexico if it turned northward. (Reporting by Jason Lange and John O'Callaghan)
