CANADA: August 29, 2008

OTTAWA - A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Canada's Vancouver Island on Thursday but was too far away to be felt on land and too small to generate a tsunami, the Canadian government said.

The quake was the latest of a series in the seismically active Pacific region about 120 miles (200 km) west of Vancouver Island, Natural Resources Canada said.

On Monday, there was a quake of 4.2 magnitude in the same area and on Wednesday one of 5.0 magnitude.

Thursday's quake hit at 5:37 a.m. local time (1237 GMT).

The US Geological Survey said it was centered 95 miles (153 km) west-southwest of Port Hardy, British Columbia, and 293 miles (472 km) west-northwest of Vancouver.

The USGS said the quake was reported at a depth of 6.2 miles (10 km). (Reporting by Randall Palmer; editing by Ted Kerr)
