Planet Ark World Environment News - in partnership with Colonial First State Quake Hits East Timor, Residents Panic

Date: 17-Sep-08
Country: EAST TIMOR

Indonesia's quake agency said the epicentre of the quake lay at a depth of 30 km, (19 mile) 163 km southeast of the capital, Dili.

"People panicked and rushed out from their houses," said Caitano Guterres, a resident in Baucau, about 75 km northeast of Dili.

East Timor and Indonesia lie in the so-called "Pacific Ring of Fire", an area of intense seismic activity.
