UK: June 19, 2000

LONDON - Environmental campaign group Friends of the Earth said on Friday the Waitrose supermarket chain came top in a series of "green" food tests while Tesco Plc was amongst the worst performers.

Waitrose, which is owned by the John Lewis Partnership, scored eight points out of 12 in the survey while Tesco scored just two points.

Friends of the Earth graded supermarkets according to the amount of organic food they sold, efforts taken to remove pesticides and the proportion of products which were GM-free.

J. Sainsbury Plc scored four, Marks and Spencer Plc five, while ASDA and Iceland Group Plc were among the leaders with six points each.

Danish budget chain Netto scored no points in bottom place.

"People want affordable food, free of GM ingredients and dangerous chemical residues - at a fair price," said Friends of the Earth food campaigner Sandra Bell. "Our survey - suggests that the supermarkets have a long way to go to meet public demands."

The organisation is planning to promote a "real food week" on June 16 when it will publish further information.
