A man stands on a bank of the flooded Ganges river as fishermen look for fish in the northern Indian city of Allahabad.

Rising rivers have crumpled embankments, swamped farmlands and destroyed homes, killing almost 1,000 people since the monsoon rains began in June. Officials in Uttar Pradesh have moved more than 10,000 people into temporary shelters after their houses were destroyed in floods.
