The calf, which is believed to be 2 months old, has been named "Wilgi Ma Nung" which in the local Wardandi Aboriginal language means "white whale".

According to whale watches, the calf will remain in Flinder's Bay with its mother for another month while it gains strength and size before making the journey to the Antarctic for summer feeding.

Flinder's Bay, Augusta is a birthing and nursery ground for the southern right whales.
