UK Environment Minister Elliot Morley and London Mayor Ken Livingstone are just
two of the politicians who are backing the Planet Ark/ DMA
'Mailing Preference Service' campaign. Their support has been welcomed by Jon
Dee, the Co-Founder with Pat Cash of Planet Ark.
"The waste that we generate represents one of the major environmental
challenges facing Britain today," says Jon Dee. "England recycles or
composts just 12 percent of its household waste - one of the lowest rates in
Europe - and the Government has set a target that this rate should rise to 25
percent by 2005/2006".
"13% of direct mail is currently recycled, but the direct mail industry
and Planet Ark are hoping to increase this to 30% by 2005," says
Environment Minister Elliot Morley. "But to achieve this figure, we need
everyone to put their unwanted post out for recycling along with their
newspapers," he said.
The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone is joining with Elliot Morley to
encourage all London boroughs to support this campaign as part of the wider
'Recycle for London' initiative that they launched in early September.
"If we are to be serious about reducing the amount of waste that we send
to landfill, then councils, industry, government and the public need to get
involved with initiatives such as this," said the Mayor of London.
"Working together, we can make a real difference to the environment,"
he said.
Over 50 local authorities nationally have already agreed to promote this waste
reduction program. In addition to the GLA,
'Rethink-Rubbish'
and
'Recycle-More'
are also helping Planet Ark in this push to get councils to join this campaign.
