Green Resolutions

Week 30: I resolve to fit energy saving compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and replace down-lights with energy-efficient light emitting diode lamps (LEDs) to reduce my energy consumption.

Date: 28-Jul-09

My lighting demands go up as daylight hours decrease in Winter. The Federal Government has begun phasing out energy inefficient light bulbs, like incandescent bulbs, so now is the best time to switch my light bulbs over to energy-efficient compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), halogens or light emitting diodes (LEDs).

I can buy CFLs that are about five times more energy-efficient and last about eight times longer than incandescent globes. I will bear in mind that quality brands tend to last longer. Making the switch is easy, cost effective and helps me to fight climate change.

While some raise concerns about CFLs, most, if not all of these, are based on information that is either outdated or incorrect. Planet Ark teamed up with Philips to dispel the 7 myths surrounding CFLs. Visit 7myths.planetark.org to learn more.
