Week 47: I resolve to use a readily biodegradable and garden-safe laundry detergent so that I can reuse my greywater to keep my garden green.
Date: 24-Nov-09
Much less than 1% of the Earth's water is fresh water, with most water tied up in glaciers, icecaps and oceans; and the water available to us is the result of constant recycling through the water cycle.*
In Australia, as summer heat intensifies, rather than waste fresh drinking water, it's important that we are all doing as much as we can to conserve water. Using a readily biodegradable and greywater safe detergent like Aware laundry powder means water from my washing machine can be used directly on my garden. In some areas, rebates are even available to help me install water saving devices like a simple diverter, to a full greywater treatment system.
For more information on the do's and don'ts of using greywater in my home, and to find out about some of the rebates available, visit www.savewater.com.au/how-to-save-water/in-the-home/grey-water. I can also download a greywater fact sheet, visit www.awareenvironmental.com.au/faqs.shtml.
