Green Resolutions

Week 51: I resolve to use recyclable or reusable gift cards and wrap this festive season, in order to reduce waste and save resources.

Date: 22-Dec-09

Giving and receiving gifts is a fun part of the festive season. It also means that we all use gift wrap and cards.

There are also lots of clever ways that I can avoid, use and reuse cards and wrap, such as tying a bow around oversized gifts like bicycles instead of wrapping them in paper; using old maps, Sunday comics or old sheets of music as wrap; using kids artwork for presents to proud grandparents; giving gifts in baskets, tins, jars or material bags, which can all be reused; and saving bows, ribbons and paper to reuse next year.

Over 90% of Australian households have access to kerbside recycling collections, so I will recycle those gift cards and wrap that I cannot reuse in my household recycling bin.

For more ideas on how I can have a festive season that's as much fun for the environment as it is for me, I can visit Planet Ark's Festive Recycling web site.
